The GPS Institute of Agricultural Management is established under the aegis of Dr.G.P. Shetty Agri Research and Education Trust, and named after him, a great visionary in agriculture from Karnataka. The institute has started PG Diploma/Diploma in Agricultural Management and ASCI-NSDC affiliated programmes for the benefit of Agricultural and allied science graduates to enhance and elevate their skills, knowledge and competencies in applied aspects of agricultural technologies, agribusiness, and transfer of technologies and entrepreneurship so as to empower them in choosing their career path. Since most of the students are hailing from the rural areas with poor socio-economic background, the institute has introduced an unique scheme of loan linked with assured placement.

This is a full-time residential program involving theory and practical classes with field work spread over in five days a week covering the dynamics of Natural Resource Management, soil fertility and plant nutrition, plant healthcare, crop production, farm machineries and post-harvest management, agribusiness and market. The Saturdays are exclusively devoted towards guest lectures, seminars/workshops and project work.

The GPS institute edge:The institute is equipped with state of art infrastructure comprising laboratories, smart class rooms, hostel rooms, computer lab with high speed internet, seminar hall and auditorium. In addition, the institute has well developed research farms for “on farm” training in agricultural management towards enhancing hands-on skills. As a vibrant Agri. Management School, the training module is based on innovative teaching methods, exposure to farm and industry, best bet practices that provide real experience learning. The PG Diploma in Agriculture Management focuses not only on hard skills but also on soft skills in the curriculum that enables students to perform par excellence in seeking employment.

    Diploma/ Post Graduate Diploma In Agricultural Management (DAM/PGDAM)

    Institute is offering Diploma/ Post Graduate Diploma in Agricultural Management (DAM/PGDAM) programmes. In this residential programme Management here referred not just to the business ideology; otherwise conglomerate the entire facets of technological aspects of farming, from seed to harvest and beyond. This initiative is borne out of the strongly felt need of the farming sector. As a pioneer Agri. Management School, the training module is based on case method of teaching, which is used in most advanced management schools of India and Abroad. The pedagogical and learning processes have evolved as process of dynamics of possibilities and are provided in the continued part of this proposal. The institute fully focused in developing into any modern university standard, such that it’s graduates should fit to the enterprises next day to their completing training.

    Pedagogy:

    GPS institute aims at adapting the case method approach to its agricultural management programme. Nothing can be managed without the adequate accounting. It has sufficiently thought and kept the insights while evolving that farming has prioritized with least accounting and balances. Hence the proper dynamics of learning processes made to a unique pedagogy entails working in groups, which encourages active participation as students learn to identify alternatives, evaluate options, assimilate multiple perspectives, think through management problems and present their insights. So also the real-life situations of farming and subsequent decision making process are included.

    Instructional Techniques:

    This is a full-time course of two semesters with on-field training and work experience. There are seven permanent instructor/managers who teach and coordinate as well as manage the farms and fields. The instructors work together to create the curriculum and to deliver the course through a variety of instructional techniques, as outlined below:
    1. Field based (4 days per week on average)
    Much of the learning in this program happens through the doing. Garden and field work provide time for ongoing instruction, practical demonstrations of  methods, structured work sessions, informal walks and talks, questions and answers, and observations before, during, and after work hours.
    2. Lectures and Workshops
    Whole group classes, lectures, and workshops provide the opportunity to disseminate core information to the entire group and to provide the theoretical background for the skills being taught in the fields. Visiting speakers/Adjunct Faculty, brought in to increase the range of topics covered, are drawn from the rich pool of agricultural scientists, extensionists, farmers, and Agriculturists from different parts of Karnataka and India.
    3. Practical Skill Classes
    The field and garden staff lead classes on site-specific topics such as irrigation, equipment, and plant groups. Faculty members also lead field/garden walks, discussions and demonstrations, allowing for students to have a more interactive learning experience. The objective is to infuse core and professional skills among the students.
    4. Field Trips
    During the program, students take field trips to different farm and garden operations. Opportunities abound for apprentices to organize their own informal field trips to interesting horticultural and agricultural sites in and around Bangalore area.

    Learning Modules

    The programmes are strengthened by six learning modules as follows
    1. Natural Resource Dynamics
    Thrust: Resource management such as Soil, water, Environment and Lifescape.
    Essentials: This module includes the essential science and technological tools of practical management of these resources. The on-farm understanding of the needs to match the real time applications are taught. The ecology of handling resources will be the most wanted learning process.
    Process: The process is designed
    1. To increase the competence in areas of resource management.
    2. To ensure the scientific concepts for further application.
    3. To provide the technical aspects of handling the risks of resource management, such as problematic soils, water scarcity, drought, climate vagaries etc.
    4. To analyse the rational of climate knowledge in various farm applications.
    5. To assess & use alternative knowledge systems in resource management.
    2. Soil & Plant Nutrition Dynamics
    Thrust: Equip the students for major, secondary and micro nutrient management.
    Essentials: It find them to realise the fine tuned requirements of chemistry and practice of production function based on mass action and material transfer. The sources and dynamics of their deals in actual condition are the major essential components of the nutrition management issues.
    Process:  The process includes the understanding of
    1. Physics, Chemistry & Biology of Plant Nutrition
    2. Concepts in Fertility, Diagnostics and Remediation (Lab, Visual and Reference Methods)
    3. Soil Nutrient Management (Conventional and Alternative)
    4. Planning and Management strategies in nutrition
    3. Plant Protection Dynamics
    Thrust: Protection concepts and on-farm pest & disease issues at ecosystem scale.
    Essentials: The basics of plant protection and the real time solutions with appropriate modern functions will be the part of learning process. The protection function of crop husbandry both at horizontal and vertical issue with specific pest type and associated pests are made with short cut findings. Ultimately the training fulfils the protection possible at farm with most ecological insights.

    Thrust: Handling dynamics of inputs, produce and recyclable wastes.
    Essentials: Material handling in farming has not been viewed as desired. It has to value the each transformed aggregate and make the best use of the value to the component. As the matter is moved to another form it’s value needs to be calculated and harnessed. What makes these possible in precise exercises, and how to prioritize and add time value etc will be including in learning process.
    Process:  Process helps in Increasing competence for decision making in material handling at various stages such as Sowing, Growth stage, Reproductive stage, Harvesting, Drying/Processing, Storage, Minimize lose on storage.

    Thrust:- Understanding Supply chain of Inputs and Produce.  Financing and budgeting in agricultural enterprises.
    Essentials: The real time markets run the situation with a wide variety of supply and demand. The inputs and produce in market dynamics are to be interfaced with practical contexts, and handled efficiently. With the present application of mathematical variant the competitive or non-cooperative gaming in markets are tried with actual scale. How is the market makes these dynamics possible will be the actual curriculum of the process.
    Process: The making of dynamism includes,

    6. Agri Engineering Dynamics
    Thrust:  Interfacing engineering with Farming such as Energy, Power and mechanics, as well as in the Data science and Soft skills.
    Essentials: Engineering has not been percolated as it has been in to many other sectors, such as transportation, construction and in many industries. The so called life components have been argued on the face of farming and neglected the precision in practice.  But on contrary the biological essentials have been evolved at most precision and with a complex understanding. However the engineering possibilities are the advantage of present situation and are made available tool to the learners.
